I would add a custom calculation script to the field for the spawned date that tests the "default" value of the field and if it is blank then set the "value" and "defaultValue" to the current date and time.

Hi,

I'm trying to set a date field on page templates that takes the current date and applies it as a kind of time stamp when the template is spawned, to show when that page was generated.

Any ideas?
