To clarify, I am not talking about Acrobat's AutoUpdate feature...

I want to post instructional PDF files to my website for my customers to download and use.  Occasionally, these PDF files will be revised or updated with new content.  Is there a way that when a customer opens one of these PDF files that it can see if a newer version of the PDF file exists and if so notify the user and allow them to download the updated PDF?

TIA,
hp

I can't think of a way that you'd be able to create a seamless check for updates process within a PDF. You could use JavaScript to launch a URL which would include the PDF identifying number (e.g. http://www.domain.com/updates/pdf_1.2.2.1) and then on the server-side when you received a request for such a URL you would compare the version number in the URL to the version number for that PDF in your database.

The problem with doing that is that there's no way to seamlessly pass that information back into the server that's guaranteed to work in a variety of different PDF viewers. In this case it'll probably have to be a one way street and the user will have to separately download the new PDF from a webpage.

If you had a custom built PDF viewer then of course things would be much easier...
