I am trying to make a beamer presentation with embedded sounds using pdflatex.
A \sound control sequence is defined in the beamer multimedia package. When I use it, a button appears in my document as it should, but clicking it just produces an error message in all of the pdf display programs that I have tried (xpdf, acroread and evince on redhat linux). I think that the problem is that the viewers need to have a default application specified for playing the sound, but I don't know how to specify it. The system as a whole has a default sound player, specified via
/etc/mimetypes and /etc/mailcap, and it works, so the pdf viewers must be looking somewhere else.

The error message from xpdf is
Syntax Error: Unknown link action type: 'Sound'
from acroread
Cannot find an appropriate player for the sound
and from evince
Unimplemented action: POPPLER_ACTION_UNKNOWN

Searching for the string "Sound" in my pdf file, I come up with
/Subtype /Link /A << /S /Sound /Sound 12 0 R /Mix false /Repeat false >>
